GIANT CLAM CAGE MAINTENANCE

The Semporna Islands Project (SIP) hatchery team recently conducted essential maintenance on our giant clam ocean nurseries. This crucial work involved meticulous cleaning and thorough inspections of the underwater cages.

Why is this so important?

  • Optimal Growth: Clean cages ensure optimal water flow and light penetration, maximizing the growth and health of these magnificent creatures.
  • Preventing Disease: Regular maintenance helps prevent the buildup of algae and other organisms that can harm the clams and increase the risk of disease outbreaks.
  • Data Collection: These inspections provide valuable data on clam growth rates, survival rates, and overall health, allowing us to refine our cultivation techniques and improve the success of our conservation efforts.

By nurturing these incredible animals, we’re not only safeguarding a vital part of our marine ecosystem but also contributing to the long-term health and resilience of our coral reefs.
